Genetic diversity within a crop species is crucial for its long-term success and resilience. Existing diversity can be preserved through the conservation of heirlooms. New diversity arises through natural mutations and deliberate plant breeding efforts aimed at creating novel genetic combinations and varieties. An exemplary case study in showcasing the remarkable breadth of genetic diversity within a plant species can be found in the Citrus family.

Citrus has the rare genetic combination of being sexually promiscuous (aka “floral philanderers”) and highly prone to mutation. This inherent genetic propensity has facilitated natural hybridization in the wild over millennia and, more recently, has been harnessed by humans through selective breeding practices. Notably, every modern citrus fruit, including oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits, traces its ancestry back to just three original species: the citron, pomelo, and mandarin.
